Manuscripts by John Leonard Riddell and Josiah Hale, 1850?-1852 (inclusive).

Consists of an annotated copy of Catalogus florae ludovicianae (1852), including manuscript fragment from earlier work submitted to Smithsonian, and a 9 page manuscript, which is a copy of Hale's lists of Cyperaceae and Gramineae, by Sereno Watson. Also 13 pages of miscellaneous manuscripts, possibly by Josiah Hale, similar to the latter list.

John Leonard Riddell, physician, biologist, and inventor, was born in Leyden, Mass., Feb. 20, 1807. In 1835 he was appointed professor of chemistry and botany at Cincinnati Medical College, and published his "Synopsis of the Flora of the Western States". He received an M.D. degree in 1836 from Cincinnati Medical College. Watson was graduated from Yale University (1847) and later studied chemistry and minerology at Sheffield Scientific School. He joined Clarence King's expedition to survey the 40th parallel, and wrote the botanical report (1871) for the expedition. Watson was appointed assistant in the Gray Herbarium in 1873; Curator, 1874-1892; and Instructor in Phytogeography, 1881-1884.
